Overview

The job of a Private Investigator (PI) is one of the careers that are pursued by most young people today as it includes many fascinating and intriguing events. The fast pace of modern life has led to an increase in criminal activities like fraud and identity theft, thereby creating a high demand for Private Investigators who possess the necessary skills and have acquired proper training. Information is discovered and explored by Private Investigators for the people who hire them. The services offered by a Private Investigator vary from physical protection to personal enquiries and background check, from criminal investigation to child custody cases and even fraudulent insurance claims. The nature of the job varies depending on the case and sometimes the client.

Depending on the level of skill and training, a Private Investigator could specialise in the investigation of corporate, forensic, insurance, legal or financial matters. It is up to the individual to choose an area that one is interested in, comfortable with and enjoys doing. Thus, a person can become a general investigator or specialize in cases varying from marital disputes, custody battles, high-tech intelligence gathering for multi-national corporations or investigating criminal profiles. A Private Investigator can choose to work alone or as part of an agency.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
